Turn Right on Communication & Computer Access Ave.

Have you ever had a student who was hard of hearing? I have had several experiences with students who were hard of hearing and needed the help of a hearing assistive technology device. Hearing assistive technology "is the term for assistive technology that helps people who have hearing losses"(Dell, 142). Using hearing assistive technology help students by:
  • Minimizing background noise such as chairs, fan motors, whirring, and students talking
  • Overcoming the weakening effect of sound traveling through air
  • Reducing the effect of poor room acoustics
  • Enhance student performance
  • Enhance students’ communication in the classroom
Some examples of hearing assistive technologies are:
  • FM system,
  • Infrared system
  • Induction loop system
  • Soundfield amplification system
Overall, as a teacher I would want to use such devices, so that my students with hearing difficulties get the best accommodations they need.

  1. Devan,

It is great that you have past experience working with students who suffer from hearing loss, as well as working with hearing assistive technology devices. These experiences will help you prepare for the upcoming module. I also thought the picture of assistive technology devices was very helpful, as it shows the various types of devices learners have the opportunity to work with.
